This is our second post celebrating poems from student-writers at the South Education Center in Richfield, MN. For the past month they’ve been working with teaching-writer Alice Paige through our Mentorship Program, which is a collaboration with Austim Sibs Universe (ASU) funded by the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council (MRAC).
Poem 1 The night sky is dark moon. It sings with Midnight. Yellow circles the sun with sky. We focus too much on night. When I look up, I see red moon.
Poem 2
see everything be real
see a black figure with red eyes
sounds like a demon
eats people
smells like rotten fish
can’t stop shaking
in shelter
i don’t feel safe
i use a hammer
and nails
to barricade the door.
i barricade the window.
i prepare myself.
Poem 3
The night sky is like outer space
I’ve seen pictures of outer space
It looks dark like outer space
the night sky looks like
it had
the sound
in the past
of spaceships.
the space
ships look like they circle the sun.
we focus too much on ordinary looks.
Poem 4
In my pockets you could find
a holy book
& my phone
a world of all nations & towns & kingdoms & cities & villages fit between fabric
in spring more sunglasses
then comes summer & beaches & lakes
fall arrives with its falling leaves
then the winter, its need for thick coats & snow gloves
& snow pants & scarves & hats & snow boots
a life of
whole things
everythings
entire things
each thing
all things
few many much lot of
things
"we focus too much on ordinary looks." Yes. So much revelation in so many of these lines.
